Here bigynneþ þe Prolog on o boc maad of þe foure Gospeleris |
Clement, a preeste of þe chirche of Lantony, gaderede alle þe sentences of þe foure Gospeleres into o storie. Þre profites ben of þis trauaile. Þe firste, for a man mai han redili what þinges ben seid of eche Gospeler bi hymself, and whiche þinges ben lefte out, and whiche biforn occupied, and whiche ben remembrid. For not alle Gospeleeris seyn alle þinges, and þo þingis whiche þei seyn, þei seyn not alle þingis bi kyndeli ordre in her place, but þei biforn occupien þo þinges þat ben don aftirward, and þei remembren aftirward þo þinges þat ben don biforeto. Þo þingis whiche eche Gospeler seiþ þi hymself ben set forþ withouten eny abregging. Þo þingis whiche two or þre or foure Gospeleris seyn ben set ones and neþeles whateuere þing eche of hem setteþ to withouten/ [fo. 13v] oþir, is set forþ opinli. Þe secounde profit is þis: þat þis trauaile scheweþ acordyng of þe foure Gospeleeris. Þe þridde profit is þis: þat þis trauaile declareþ þe ordre of þingis don, þat herbi esiere entring of vndirstonding be opin into þe ordre of þe Gospelis and þat þe resoun of ordinaunce of þe Gospeles be clerere. |
Þus þe elde Greek doctour Ammonyus lefte o bok for foure Gospeles to þe vses of þe chirche, as Eusebie witnessiþ. Also, þe olde Grec doctor Teofile, þat was from Seynt Petir þe seuenthe Bisschop of Antioche, made oo booc of foure Gospelis, as Seynt Jerome witnesseþ in his Epistolis. Also Seynt Austin in his booc Of Acording of þe Foure Gospelis ʒyueþ bigynnyngis of þis werk and schewith þe maner of procedyng, or goyng forþ, in þis werk and mynystriþ ablite/ [fo. 14r] to performe. |
Clement settiþ in þe biginnyng of a chapitre what Gospeler seiþ þe firste sentence, and at ich sentence of anoþir Gospeler he setteþ þe name of þat Gospeler, ʒhe for o word, so þat in many places of his þook þe names of þe Gospeleris ocupyen miche more space þan þe sentences doon. Þerfor, lest þis ofte rehersing and medeling of þe names of þe Gospeleris among þe sentence shulde make þe sentence derk, and cumbre symple mennis wittes, he setteþ in þe bigynnyng of a chapitre alle þe Gospeleris þat treeten þat chapitre and in what place of the Bible. |
